SteriPEN® Ultra

Living in this great country, we all take our clean drinking water a bit for granted. But how about when you are out doing those great outdoor activities like hiking, mountain climbing, trekking, camping, hunting or just hanging out in the bush. Is there clean, safe drinking water available?

Dragging bottled water with you is not only a pain; there are limits to how much you can carry. Sure, you can risk it by drinking water out of streams or ponds, but there is nothing worse than catching some bug that can ruin a much anticipated trip away.

A great alternative is the SteriPEN® Ulta, a convenient, safe and simple unit that purifies your water in a matter of seconds.

Now, how does the SteriPEN® work? SteriPEN® uses ultraviolet light purification technology to make water safe to drink. This is the same technology used by many leading bottled water manufacturers as well as a number of water treatment facilities in major European, America and Asian cities. UV purification works as the ultraviolet energy emitted by the light is absorbed by the cells of the microbe, preventing cell enzymes from ‘reading’ it’s DNA. Without intact DNA, microbes can’t reproduce to make you sick. The process is simple but effective, destroying over 99 percent of harmful microorganisms.

There are other methods of purifying water such as iodine or chlorine, but that takes time and the result is not always that pleasant. Of course you can buy bottled water if it is available, but I think there are many of us who do not like seeing all that plastic being returned to the environment not to mention the uncertainty of how the bottled water was treated in the first place particularly if you are in a developing country.

Purifying water with UV light offers many advantages. In addition to being safe and effective, UV light does not alter the taste, pH, or other properties of the water, and works without the introduction of chemicals. I can tell you though; it does not alter the taste of the water and does not remove impurities such as grit and sand. So if the water you are trying to purify tastes bad to begin with it will still taste bad after treating it.

It is advised that if the water is cloudy, dirty or has visible impurities in it you should filter it before you using the Ultra to get rid of as many impurities as you can. You can buy a suitable filter (SteriPEN® has one) or you can use a coffee filter or even your tee shirt at a pinch. This will insure that the lamp works effectively.

Ultra is so easy to use that even the most technology challenged person can operate it.  It is just a matter of pressing a button (once if you are purifying a litre and twice if you are doing ½ litre), placing the Ultra-light into the container of water, stirring the water with the Ultra and the screen will change from a frown to a smiley face when the water is safe to drink. It should take 48 seconds for ½ litre and about 90 seconds for a litre. How cool is that!

The lamp for this unit will purify 8,000 litres before needing replacement that equates to 16,000 plastic water bottles you don’t need to cart with you.

SteriPEN® Ultra is like its little brother, the SteriPEN® Traveller Mini Opti, However, the Ultra has an internal battery that can be recharged with a USB cable plugged into your computer, a wall socket or even portable solar panel and it can treat 50 litres of water before having to be recharged. It is still compact and lightweight at 140 grams and easy to stach in your backpack or carryon.

A little info about the company that created SteriPEN®. These guys hail from Maine in the US. They are a dedicated team of outdoor enthusiasts who get to live in a pristine location doing work they are passionate about. The founder of the company thought that there were better ways than filters or chemicals to purify water in the wild. He developed and patented the first StreiPEN® in 1999 and now the company holds 8 patents. Their website states that in 2011 TIME Magazine named the SteriPEN® one of the “Top 100 All-Time Gadgets.” Backpacker Magazine, Newsweek, and the Today Show have featured SteriPEN® as a powerful, user-friendly alternative to pumps, chemicals and filters.

And another major factor that is worth thinking about when it comes to clean drinking water  is the need to have a well thought out emergency plan in case of some catastrophic weather event. I bet some of you feel that you could not be impacted by such an event, but there are many people that will tell you they also felt that way until it actually happened to them.

Having a simple, convenient and safe method of purifying water could be a life saver for you and your loved ones if heaven forbid you are ever caught in a situation where clean water supply is cut off for a period. So take the advice of the experts, do a plan, have an emergency kit on standby and if I were you I would include a water purification unit of some sort.

I have one of these in my emergency kit at home and I have a SteriPEN® Traveller Mini that I take with me on my trips to Asia. Shouldn’t you?

At Hiszone we have bundled the SteriPEN® Ultra with a Klean Kanteen® insulated stainless steel Food Canister. These fantastic BPA-free and eco-friendly products provide you an ideal container to purify your water in with your new SteriPEN® Ultra.
